Houston's Top Chefs Use Their Skills to Fight Human Trafficking
Houston, TX --- On Sunday, September 21st from 5-9pm popular Houston chefs will compete for the title of Freedom Chef 2014 to raise funds for A 2ND CUP, a non-profit coffee shop fighting human trafficking. Local Fare for Local Freedom will take place at Monica Pope's restaurant, Sparrow Bar + Cookshop, on September 21st as part of Human Trafficking Awareness Month in Houston. Guests will have the opportunity to taste signature hors d'oeuvres from each of the six participating chefs and vote on their favorite with a donation to A 2ND CUP. This fundraiser will also include a silent auction featuring packages from each chef. Participating chefs include:
+ Monica Pope // Sparrow Bar + Cookshop
+ Dawn Burrell // Chef Dawn Burrell Catering
+ Soren Pedersen // Currant Kitchen
+ Donald Chang // Nara Sushi & Korean Kitchen
+ Amalia Pferd // Good Dog Houston
+ Travis Lenig // Liberty Kitchen and Oysterette
The initial spark for the fundraiser was made as James Beard nominee, Top Chef Masters participant and locally acclaimed chef, Monica Pope, met with board members of A 2nd Cup and offered her restaurant as the event's venue. The idea grew as former Olympian turned global comfort food chef, Dawn Burrell jumped on board, quickly followed by Soren Pedersen, renowned local chef now hosting Currant Kitchen. Restaurateur and executive chef at Nara, Donald Chang followed with a resounding "yes" to use his skills to fight human trafficking. The outstanding chef list was rounded out with food truck to brick and mortar success story, Amalia Pferd of Good Dog, and executive chef of the hot new Liberty Kitchen and Oysterette in River Oaks, Travis Lenig.
Tickets for the event can be purchased in advance from A 2nd Cup's website: www.a2ndcup.com/local. A 2nd Cup is also offering sponsorship opportunities for individuals or businesses to join them in making this fundraiser a huge success. Information on sponsoring the event can be found at www.a2ndcup.com/local#Sponsor.
A 2nd Cup is already making a positive impact for a cause that matters to many Houstonians by operating once a week out of several Houston churches. They have seen a great deal of success with engaging the public in the fight against human trafficking. This fundraiser will enable the cause-fighting coffee shop to exponentially increase their impact and initiatives by opening a full-time shop.
